AIDS moms, how do you protect your baby from infection?

This, indeed, is the claim of some women in life. In addition to AIDS, there are also diseases such as Hepatitis B and syphilis that are causing problems for some women.

How can we prevent mother-to-child transmission of infectious diseases such as AIDS, syphilis and hepatitis B? The key lies in the following four points.

I. Do the screening.

Preferably pre-pregnancy screening. Our province provides 20 free pre-pregnancy eugenics screening services, including AIDS, syphilis and hepatitis B, for all couples planning to become pregnant who are in line with the fertility policy, and by maternal and child health-care organizations at the county and district levels; early pregnancy screening is once again universal and also essential. The province has already achieved full coverage of free basic public health services during pregnancy and childbirth, with all pregnant women, regardless of their household registration, receiving free screening for AIDS, syphilis and hepatitis B in early pregnancy.

(b) Early treatment for pregnant women diagnosed with the infection.

HIV-positive pregnant women are provided with free antiretroviral drugs, and syphilis-infected patients are given two courses of standardized penicillin treatment. Pregnant women infected with hepatitis B are referred to specialists for further advice and guidance.

III. Safe delivery services.

There is a State subsidy for hospitalized deliveries of HIV-infected mothers. It is worth noting that HIV infection is not an absolute indication for caesarean section and that vaginal delivery is an option if effective treatment is provided during pregnancy.

IV. Standardized treatment and follow-up of newborns.

Newborns of HIV-infected mothers are given antiretroviral drugs as early as possible to prevent mother-to-child transmission. Because breast milk is contagious, it is recommended that these children be artificially fed, and the State also provides subsidized milk powder for their feeding; newborns of syphilitic mothers are tested, evaluated, and judged for the effectiveness of mother-to-child interruption of prevention as early as possible, and are given the necessary neonatal treatments; and newborns of Hepatitis B mothers are given immunoglobulin and Hepatitis B vaccinations free of charge as early as possible after delivery. Newborns of syphilitic and hepatitis B mothers can be breastfed provided that effective mother-to-child interventions are implemented.
